🍷 5 Simple Steps to Tasting Wine Like a Pro
1. See 👀
Hold your glass up to the light or against a white background. Take a good look at the wine’s color, clarity, and viscosity (how it moves in the glass). A wine’s appearance can give clues about its age, grape variety, and even body.
2. Swirl 🍷
Gently swirl your glass in a circular motion. This helps oxygen mix with the wine and releases its aromas. It also gives you a better sense of the wine’s texture and alcohol level (watch those “legs” running down the side of the glass).
3. Sniff 👃
Now lean in and take a few short sniffs. What do you notice? Fruit, flowers, spice, earth? Your nose can detect hundreds of aromas in wine—this is where a lot of the magic happens.
4. Sip 👅
Take a small sip and let it move across your tongue. Pay attention to taste, texture, and structure. Notice the acidity (mouthwatering or flat?), tannins (smooth or grippy?), body (light or full?), and—of course—the flavors.
5. Savor 🧠
After swallowing (or spitting, if you’re tasting many wines), take a moment to reflect. How long do the flavors linger? Did anything surprise you? How did everything come together—the balance, finish, and overall impression?
